The Kandy Esala Perahera is one of the Sri Lanka's foremost religious celebrations. The principal processions of the Esala Perahera are the sathara devala peraheras which is dedicated to the four guardian gods. The perahera is commension on Esala full moon poya day and concludes on Nikini full moon poya day with the Randoli perahera and the Diya Kepeema at the Mahaweli River at Getambe. The important event associate with the perahera is placing the casket on the back of the tusker. Here the Nasungamuwe ath raja holds a special place as the bearer of the casket for the 12 years.
